History Origins of the clan. The name Kerr is rendered in various forms such as Kerr, Ker, Kear, Carr, Carre, and Cares.

The name stems from the Old Norse kjarr which means marsh dweller, and came to Scotland from Normandy, the French settlement of the Norsemen.

Another variant is found on the west coast of Scotland, particularly on the Isle of Arran, taken from the Gaelic ciar, meaning ct: Scottish Borders.

The name ‘Carr’ is derived from the name KERR with ancestry from the Scottish Lowlands, and as such, those with the name Kerr or Carr are a family and not a clan. Some other spellings Kerr the original name include Kerr, Karre, Carr and Carre. There is no Gaelic spelling for the lowland Kerrs, as these Kerr/Carrs were not Gaelic speakers.

Originally descending from two brothers, Ralph and John Ker, clan Kerr were prominent Crown vassals by the 15th century and gained a number of titles, including the Earldom of Lothian - a title upgraded to Marquess of Lothian at the beginning of the 17th century.

The inscription on his memorial in Jedburgh Abbey reads "Sir THOMAS KERR of Fernyherst, Warden of the Marches, Provost of Edinburgh and Jedburgh, Father of Andrew Lord Jedburgh, Sir James Kerr of Creylin (Crailing) and Robert Earl of Somerset.

He died at Aberdeen on Ma and lies buried before the Communion Table. The surname of Kerr is an Anglo-Saxon surname, but has deep roots in a Pre 7th Century Old Norse origin. This surname was a topographical one, and found mostly in the “Border counties” of England and Scotland.
